The opening seminar and workshop of the GRAD project took place on the 6th and 7th of December 2018 in Cracow. They were held under the theme „Green roofs as a tool for climate adaptation of urban areas” and addressed to the representatives of local self-governments from all over the country interested in the topic of climate adaptation and development of green infrastructure, with the particular focus on green roofs and living walls.
During the seminar the participants learned more about the German and Polish climate adaptation policies, as well as green roofs’ role in cities’ sustainable development. The latter was also the subject of the panel discussion involving representatives of pilot cities engaged in the project. The next presentations concerned embedding green roof strategies in other strategy documents and the overall urban green spacer management regime, as well as their linkage with the cities’ water footrpint. The participants of the seminar also learned more about the Hamburg’s Green Roof Strategy, which was discussed in detail by the representative of the city, as well as got familiar with Polish good practices concerning green infrastructure development.
The workshop part was organised the day after the seminar and was more practical. Working in groups the participants learned how to develop own green roof strategy step by step. Their attention was drawn especially to such key aspects as building the team working on the strategy, embedding the document in spatial development procedures, introducing incentive schemes encouraging citizens and local stakeholders to build green roofs and living walls on their buildings (including economic inventives), communicating and carrying out dialogue with citizens and implementing and monitoring the strategy. The workshop was a starting point for the elaboration of pilot green roof strategies for 8 Polish cities.
