The GRAD project aims at promoting green roofs and living walls as tools for climate adaptation of urban areas, as well as initiating development of model green roof strategies in Polish cites. The project foresees transfer of German good practices in this area, with the specific focus on the outstanding experience of the City of Hamburg, which – since 2014 – successfully implements own strategy stimulating construction of green roofs within the city area. Established bilateral exchange and cooperation with thematic experts shall contribute to the elaboration of 8 new local strategies for 8 Polish pilot cities, wide dissemination of material and guidelines concerning supporting development of green infrastructUre in cities, as well as raisisng overall awareness of green roofs importance for climate protection and adaptation.

Project activities:

Following activities have been planned to achieve GRAD’s main goal:

STEP 1: BUILDING CAPACITIES AND TRANSFERRING GERMAN EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF CLIMATE ADAPTATION, WITH THE SPECIFIC FOCUS ON GREEN ROOFS’ PROMOTION AND CONSTRUCTION

  • Organisation of a seminar and workshop „Green roofs as a tool for climate adaptation in urban areas” with the participation of German experts
  • Organisation of a study visit in Hamburg for the representatives of 8 Polish pilot cities (2-3 days)
  • Development and publication of a brochure promoting elaboration of green roof strategies and presenting German experience in this field

STEP 2: DEVELOPMENT OF GREEN ROOF STRATEGIES FOR PILOT CITIES

  • Development of a common template/model for a green roof strategy (based on Hamburg experience)
  • Development and adoption of 8 green roof strategies in 8 Polish pilot cities
  • Organisation of 1-day consultation workshop for pilot cities
  • Including the 8 green roof strategies in other local strategies and policies

STEP 3: DISSEMINATION OF PROJECT PRODUCTS AND RESULTS

  • Creation and running of the project’s website
  • Development and dissemination of the project’s leaflet
  • Development and display of the project’s poster
  • Preparation of 5 thematic articles
  • Organisation of open final conference
  • Organisation of city campaigns, which will be run in pilot cities, Internet and media.

 

Planned results:

  • transfer of German experiences and good practices in the field of setting up green roofs and living walls, as well as building strategies promoting and supporting such solutions;
  • establishing cooperation between 8 Polish pilot cities and the German city of Hamburg;
  • 3 training events: seminar, workshop and comsultation workshop;
  • 1 study visit in Hamburg;
  • 1 brochure presenting examples of German climate adaptation and green roof promotion strategies, as well as good practice examples of projects implemented within these strategies;
  • 1 model template for a local green roof strategy (adapted to Polish conditions);
  • 8 local green roof strategies developer and adopted by 8 Polish pilot cities;
  • 1 open conference promoting the project’s results, construction of green roofs and living walls and implementation of other climate adaptation measures;
  • 1 set of promotional material (leaflet,  posters, articles).

The GRAD project is financed from the European Climate Initiative (contrach number: 81232154) of the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The EUKI competition for project ideas is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. It is the overarching goal of the EUKI to foster climate cooperation within the European Union (EU) in order to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
