Since April 2014 the City of Hamburg implements local green roof strategy, which aims at covering with vegatation as much as 100 ha of roof surface within its urban area. New green roofs are set up both on public and private buildings – residential and commercial. Important part of them shall be accessible to people as recreation areas or community gardens. The strategy envisages popularisation of knowledge on green roofs and their benefits, as well as introduction of the economic and non-economic incentives encouraging to build them. An import aspect of i salso mutli-stakeholder dialogue, involving representatives of the science and research sector and potential investors, who take part in dedicated trainings. Also important is ensuring that the stratgy and its objectives are always considered in spatial and landscape planning processes, e.g. when planning and implementing local legal regulations promoting and supporting setting up of green roofd. The city of Hamburg also creates green roofs on its own buildings, including school buildings.
